Course Overview

This is a live program to serve as a refresher for the EMDR standard protocol with a focus on racial trauma impacting Black clients. This course is 12 hours and 6.5 of those hours will be to practice the skills learned and reviewed. There will be a full run through of all 8-phases, information about racial trauma along with the history of anti-black racism and white supremacy, culturally relevant options for BLS, a review of the neurobiological foundations of trauma and how it connects with racial trauma, and a review on AIP. There will be a particular focus about the racial trauma that comes with the strong black woman schema and EMDR phase 2, and some information on somatic experiencing, to help clients connect with their bodies. There will be a discussion about criterion A of PTSD, which racism doesn’t meet.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the neurobiology of trauma and the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model.
  2. Develop a treatment plan that is based on the AIP model and the Three-Pronged Approach.
  3. Practice phase 2 EMDR and somatic experiencing techniques that can help clients connect with their bodies.
  4. List and describe 3 culturally-relevant options for BLS and 3 options for preparation tools.
  5. Identify all components of a target memory during the assessment phase and all tasks involved in desensitization and reprocessing.
  6. Demonstrate the installation, body scan, and closure procedures and explain signs that each phase is complete.
  7. Detail the goals, considerations, and reasons to adjust treatment planning involved in the re-evaluation phase.
  8. Explain 3 critiques of criterion A of PTSD, which racism doesn’t meet.
  9. Recognize the impact of historical and ancestral trauma on Black clients.
  10. Identify strategies to ethically engage and support Black clients, considering cultural and historical contexts.
  11. Apply cultural competence and trauma-informed care principles in social work practice.

Secure My Spot

Natalie Milom, LCSW

As an EMDRIA approved consultant and certified therapist, I focus on Racial and Relational/Attachment Trauma, helping clients and therapists understand how childhood trauma, lifetime stressors, and racial trauma shape our internal worlds, behaviors, and relationship patterns.

I help clinicians refine case conceptualization, apply EMDR effectively to complex relational dynamics, and build confidence in treating attachment wounds.

My approach is practical, evidence-based, and focused on real-world application to support deeper, lasting change.

Who is this training for?

1. Therapists who love working with Black clients and want to deepen their cultural responsiveness.

If you are committed to serving Black communities with clinical integrity and greater awareness of racial trauma, this refresher will help you strengthen your case conceptualization and apply EMDR in ways that honor culture, context, and lived experience.

2. Therapists who completed the EMDR Basic Training but need more practice and clarity.
